Algarve derived from Al Gharb, meaning “land of the Occident” as in a world gone by it was considered to truly be the end of occidental world… although times have changed you can still stand on the sandy beaches at night and observe the lights of traditional Portuguese fishing boats catching fish for the markets of local towns such as Quarteira, Olhão and Loulé.

Portugals Algarve is the perfect holiday destination, it boasts the best climate of Portugal and one of the most moderate in the world with over 3,000 hours of sun per year. The Gulf Stream ensures that the algarvean winter is comparable to the northern European spring, while the summer heat is rarely overwhelming, meaning the Algarve offers you the chance to enjoy the region all year round.

The length of the south-facing coastline is approx. 155 kilometres and stretches about 52 kilometres to the north on the west. At the widest point to the north, it is approximately 36 kilometres deep. Communication is mainly by road but there is single-track railway line running from Lagos to Vila Real do Santo António that also links to the line running to Lisbon and further north.
